For the first concert by artist in residence Paul Van Gysegem, we invite pianist Josep-Maria Balanyà, who was born in Barcelona. Josep-Maria Balanyà's concerts are powerful rituals – you could say he plays the piano with his whole body – where we can see the presence of music turning into matter. Internationally recognized as a musician in the field of improvisation and the new contemporary music, experimental music and performance, he is also a composer, conductor of improvising orchestras, sound artist, painter and photographer.

Bassist Paul Van Gysegem, best known for his monumental sculpture at Gent Sint-Pieters station, explores a new musical language, fueled by the American avant-garde of musicians such as Cecil Taylor, Steve Lacy. As a visual artist, his oeuvre is characterized by a thorough investigation of forms. This year, Paul and his quintet released the acclaimed 'Square Talks' as a follow-up to his legendary record Aorta (Futura, 1971), a historically important document in the pioneering days of European free jazz, and Traverse (el NEGOCITO Records, 2016)

This will undoubtedly be an exciting musical meeting of 2 artists, who both switch smoothly between visual art and improvised music. In their work they look for interaction in which one medium has an inspiring effect on the other.

  • Voor het eerste concert van artist in residence Paul Van Gysegem nodigen wede in Barcelona geboren pianist Josep-Maria Balanyà uit. De concerten van Josep-Maria Balanyà zijn krachtige rituelen – je zou kunnen zeggen dat hij met zijn hele lichaam piano speelt – waarbij we de aanwezigheid van muziek kunnen zien veranderen in materie. Internationaal erkend als muzikant op het gebied van improvisatie en de nieuwe hedendaagse muziek, experimentele muziek en performance, is hij ook componist, dirigent van improviserende orkesten, geluidskunstenaar, schilder en fotograaf.

    Bassist Paul Van Gysegem, vooral bekend van zijn monumentale sculptuur aan het Gent Sint-Pieters station, verkent een nieuwe muzikale taal, aangewakkerd door de Amerikaanse avant-garde van muzikanten als Cecil Taylor, Steve Lacy. Als beeldend kunstenaar kenmerkt zijn oeuvre zich door een doorgedreven vormenonderzoek. Dit jaar bracht Paul met zijn quintet het veel geprezen ‘Square Talks’ uit als opvolger van zijn legendarische plaat Aorta (Futura, 1971), een historisch belangrijk document in de pionierstijd van de Europese free jazz, en Traverse (el NEGOCITO Records, 2016).

    Dit wordt ongetwijfeld een spannende muzikale ontmoeting van 2 artiesten, die beiden vlot schakelen tussen beeldende kunst en geïmproviseerde muziek. In hun werk gaan ze op zoek naar interactie waarbij het ene medium een inspirerend effect heeft op het andere.

  • Pour le premier concert de l'artiste en résidence Paul Van Gysegem, nous invitons le pianiste Josep-Maria Balanyà, né à Barcelone. Les concerts de Josep-Maria Balanyà sont de puissants rituels – on pourrait dire qu'il joue du piano de tout son corps – où l'on voit la présence de la musique se transformer en matière. Reconnu internationalement comme musicien dans le domaine de l'improvisation et de la nouvelle musique contemporaine, de la musique expérimentale et de la performance, il est également compositeur, chef d'orchestre d'improvisation, artiste sonore, peintre et photographe.

    Le bassiste Paul Van Gysegem, surtout connu pour sa sculpture monumentale à la gare de Gent Sint-Pieters, explore un nouveau langage musical, alimenté par l'avant-garde américaine de musiciens tels que Cecil Taylor, Steve Lacy. En tant qu'artiste visuel, son œuvre se caractérise par une recherche approfondie des formes. Cette année, Paul et son quintette ont sorti le célèbre 'Square Talks' comme suite à son disque légendaire Aorta (Futura, 1971), un document historiquement important à l'époque pionnière du free jazz européen, et Traverse (el NEGOCITO Records, 2016).

    Ce sera sans aucun doute une rencontre musicale passionnante entre 2 artistes, qui alternent en douceur entre art visuel et musique improvisée. Dans leur travail, ils recherchent une interaction dans laquelle un médium a un effet inspirant sur l'autre.
